Urgent Alert! Critical Energy Votes in D.C. This Week!

Call Monday or Tuesday!

Your Representative can cast a crucial vote in the fight against global warming. This week, members of the U.S. House of Representatives will decide whether or not to take effective first steps toward reducing global warming pollution. There are two critical policies that we must urge our Representatives to support: raising miles-per-gallon standards for cars and light trucks, and requiring electric utilities to use renewable energy sources.

The bipartisan Markey-Platts fuel economy legislation (H.R. 1506) would increase miles-per-gallon standards to 35 mpg by 2018. This would save millions of barrels of oil and slash heat-trapping greenhouse gas pollution. In addition, the Udall-Platts national Renewable Electricity Standard would require 20 percent of our nation’s electricity to come from clean renewable energy sources like wind and solar by 2020. While both bills have broad bipartisan support in Congress, they still face strong opposition. They are competing with bills such as the Hill-Terry Bill, a feeble fuel economy bill that sets weak targets, extends loopholes, and allows the auto industry to continue dragging its feet on fuel economy.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

That’s why we need your help to build support in Congress. This week, energy issues will be the talk of Washington DC. America deserves a new energy policy that moves us towards energy independence by raising fuel economy standards and requiring increased production of clean, renewable energy. Help make this happen by calling your U.S. Representative on Monday or Tuesday, or Emailing him or her today!

PHONE MESSAGE: Hello, my name is [NAME] and I am calling from [NAME OF CITY]. I want to strongly urge Representative [NAME OF REPRESENTATIVE] to support improvements in fuel economy standards and a national Renewable Electricity Standard. I know that voting in favor of these two policies will create jobs, curb global warming, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Please support the Markey-Platts Fuel Economy Reform Act (HR 1506) and the Udall-Platts Renewable Electricity Standard (HR 969). Thank you.
